ALAN J. SEDLEY has a well-developed and rather unique perspective on issues facing the healthcare community. As a former in-house general counsel at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center and Associate General Counsel at Verity Health System, he brings the corporate perspective to compliment his thirty-plus years as a private firm healthcare attorney.
Alan provides counsel on hospital and medical staff governance and peer review issues, provider corrective action, medical staff bylaws and rules & regulations, and healthcare transactional, operational and regulatory matters. Alan helps clients develop and maintain up-to-date compliant policy and procedures, contracts and work force training programs.
Alan draws invaluable experience from his work as a hospital in-house as well as retained outside counsel, as he advises and represents hospitals and health systems in their oft-challenging operational issues addressing the traditional corporate concerns within the context of the healthcare marketplace. He provides advice on corporate organization and governance, strategic alliances and business transactions, medical staff relations and peer review body and practitioner disputes, medical staff bylaws, policies and procedures, practitioner credentialing, and bioethics (informed consent/end-of-life decision making/clinical research) issues.
As an experienced litigator and retained expert trial witness in peer review disputes, and from the first stages of litigation through trial and appeal in state and federal courts, Alan’s client-focused strategies and depth of experience have come to play to resolve matters as efficiently and expediently as possible.
Alan has represented numerous physicians and other healthcare professionals before California regulatory and licensing agencies, having defended providers accused of billing irregularities and fraud by Medicare and Medicaid. He has represented a countless number of hospital providers in federal court lawsuits against the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, often resulting in the payment of hundreds of thousands of dollars in additional program payment to the individual provider for which it was entitled but initially denied.
Frequently called upon to speak on health law-related topics, Alan enjoys the challenge of educating and training a variety of health care professionals including hospital and large medical group medical staff leaders, hospital administrators, medical societies, and addressing law schools and bar associations.
Above all, Alan is able to apply his extensive healthcare law experiences to get to the heart of every matter and respond effectively to the critical needs of clients, needs which are all the more necessary in this ever-changing healthcare landscape.
